CO2 Lasers

Co2 or carbon dioxide lasers are used to cut through hard surfaces, such as steel. Co2 lasers charge electrons in a vacuum of mixed gases to release their energy as photons -- particles of light. The photons are reflected by the use of mirrors and a lens to create an invisible beam that cuts (vaporizes) the metal.
